Gum Arabic for kidney failure and the gut-heart axis.

It comes from the dried sap of Acacia Senegal or Acacia Seyal, trees from Africa and the Middle East. It is widely used in traditional medicine, particularly for its nephroprotective effect. Gum arabic, when of high quality, reduces the accumulation of uremic toxins and helps to reduce creatinine and urea in the blood. Its composition of more than 95% polysaccharides explains its great prebiotic action. It nourishes and promotes beneficial intestinal bacteria (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium) which help to metabolize and eliminate uremic toxins when the kidneys struggle to do so. In addition, these bacteria transform the gum into short-chain fatty acids: Butyrate, propionate and acetate which will strengthen the mucous membranes and therefore the intestinal barrier, thus preventing the passage of toxins into the blood, which helps to reduce chronic low-grade inflammation in the body.

He added that gum arabic has beneficial effects in cases of diabetes because it slows down the absorption of glucose and improves insulin sensitivity.

Concerning the gut-heart axis, it promotes beneficial intestinal bacteria (as mentioned above) which also reduce the production of TMAO (trimethylamine-N-oxide), a pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidant molecule linked to cardiovascular, renal and certain metabolic diseases.

BONUS: The combination of gum arabic and activated charcoal (taken at different times) could also be very interesting. Activated charcoal adsorbs (traps) uremic toxins in the intestine and prevents their reabsorption into the bloodstream.
